Start to Finish – Part 1 Shopping

One of the best parts of making a pillowcase is shopping for the fabric! I have never gone to look for fabric without finding more options than I was able to purchase. When my siblings or friends go with me, we get a very wide variety of fabrics. Our choices are as varied as our personalities. This past week, my younger siblings went with me to help choose fabric.

I love seeing all the colors of the different fabrics. I could make color combinations all day with the choices in Hobby Lobby. Even now while I am writing this post I am seeing color combinations that I could have chosen. If you look closely behind me you can see green and black giraffe fabric that my aunt would have gone bonkers over!

These are the fabrics that we ended up getting. I loved the fire fighter and Dalmatian together. My little sister, Lexi, thought that the Disney princesses were amazing so she chose that fabric to make a pillowcase.  My little brother, Kodi, really liked the police fabric and the cars. The lady bugs are a story for a different post.  We always buy 1 1/8 of a yard of two coordinating fabrics.  We have found this is the best use of fabric.  Don’t be tempted to round up to 1 1/4 yard.  You will end up with a strip of fabric that is not usable for more pillowcases.  I love to choose a fabric I love and then find a matching fabric for some contrast.

When my youngest brother and I go to the store, you are guaranteed that there will be a disaster. We kept Davy in the cart most of the time but as soon as the two of us were let loose we had trouble.  Davy knocked over the sale sign and I tried to show my mom some fabric which slid off the cardboard. Oops!

When we go to Hobby Lobby there are always things that will distract us. . . like maybe a wreath form making the perfect frame for your face.

No matter what we choose or what distracts us, we have a good time and come home excited to start sewing.  Be watching for our next post.  We will be showing you how to make a pillowcase from all the fun fabric you have just waiting to be made into pillowcases.
