5 Rules for a Reading Life

I’m not going to force you not to read this or that or whatnot, because I really do not enjoy being a controlling or demanding person. So, I am not here to tell you that you should only read upside down or never read upside down. You do you!

Thus being said, I have learned some important rules about reading that I feel are important to share with anyone living the life of an avid reader.

Rule #1:
NEVER. EVER. And I mean NEVER. Read while operating a motor vehicle!

It’s very dangerous and definitely not worth it. No matter how great the book is, don’t read and drive. Doing so will probably ensure that you never get to read the next in the series.
Audiobooks: usually a great alternative for driving.
Actual books: never a good choice for drivers.

Rule #2:
Always play hide-and-seek with a book.

If you can find a good hiding spot, you’re guaranteeing yourself a few minutes of alone time. Just the other day I read an entire chapter over the span of one hide-and-seek game. Don’t waste that valuable time you spend hiding behind washers, trees, or blanket baskets.

Rule #3:
Do not read Candymakers while on a sugar-free diet.

It’s torturous.

Rule #4:
Find a quiet space to finish Where the Red Fern Grows alone.

You shouldn’t have to go through that ending with other people around. Unless, of course, you enjoy sobbing in the presence of others.

Rule #5:
NEVER leave the house without a book.

You will regret it if you do. If you have trouble remembering, tape a sine to your door with the acronym WKB, standing for Wallet, Keys, and Book. All those little minutes of waiting somewhere or another will give you more reading time than you might imagine.
